As eBikes become increasingly popular across Europe, local regulations regarding road legality are becoming strictly enforced. If your eBike is equipped with a powerful 48V 500W motor, riding it without proper configuration could result in hefty fines or vehicle confiscation in countries like Germany and France.
This guide will show you how to use your eBike's K01&K02 LCD Display to limit the top speed, simulate a 250W output, and configure the throttle to transform your high-power eBike into a street-legal Pedelec.
đĄ Part 1: Understanding European eBike Regulations (Pedelec)
Before adjusting your display, it is crucial to understand the legal targets. While there are slight variations, most EU countries follow the EN 15194 standard for Electrically Power Assisted Cycles (EPACs).
-
Standard EU Regulations (France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, etc.):
-
Maximum Assisted Speed: 25 km/h. The motor must stop providing assistance once this speed is reached.
-
Maximum Continuous Power: 250W.
-
Throttle Rules: A pure electric throttle can typically only propel the bike up to 6 km/h (Walk Assist mode). To go faster than 6 km/h, the rider must be actively pedaling.
-
-
Germany (Extremely Strict):
-
Germany rigorously enforces the 25 km/h and 250W limits. Furthermore, police are very strict regarding "zero-start" throttles. If your throttle allows you to ride at full speed without pedaling, the bike is classified as a moped (Mofa), requiring insurance, a license plate, and a specific helmet.
-
-
Austria & Switzerland (More Lenient on Power):
-
Austria: Top speed is limited to 25 km/h, but the maximum motor power can be up to 600W.
-
Switzerland: Top speed is limited to 25 km/h, with motor power allowed up to 500W.
-
The Goal: To ride legally and safely across the majority of Europe, we need to configure your KT-LCD10H display to: Limit the speed to 25 km/h, reduce the current to simulate 250W, and require pedaling for throttle use.
âïž Part 2: Setting the 25 km/h Speed Limit (General Settings)
The most fundamental requirement for a legal Pedelec is the 25 km/h motor cutoff.
Configuration Steps:
1. Power On: Hold the SW button long to turn on the meter.2. Enter General Settings: Within 5 seconds after boot-up, hold the UP and DOWN buttons simultaneously for about 2 seconds to enter the maximum riding speed setting interface. The speed display column will flash.
3. Adjust the Speed: Press the UP or DOWN button to set the maximum riding speed value to 25. When the speed exceeds this set value, the motor will be stopped driving.
4. Save and Exit: Press the SW button to save the current set values and move to the next setting. You can hold the SW button long for about 2 seconds to exit the general project setting environment entirely.
đ Part 3: Limiting the Current to Simulate 250W (C5 Parameter)
Because your motor physically outputs 500W, it exceeds the standard EU limit. We can use the C5 parameter (Controller Maximum Current Adjustment Setting) to restrict the peak current, making the riding feel and effective output closer to the legal 250W limit.
Configuration Steps:
1. Enter P Parameters: After finishing the General Settings (speed, wheel size, units), wait for the speed and mileage units to stop flashing. Within one minute, hold the UP and DOWN buttons simultaneously for about 2 seconds to enter the P parameter setting environment.
2. Enter C Parameters: Press the SW button to skip through parameters P1 to P5. After finishing the P5 parameter setting, the P5 column stops flashing. Within 1 minute, hold the UP and DOWN buttons for about 2 seconds to enter the C parameter setting environment.
3. Navigate to C5: Press the SW button repeatedly until you reach the C5 parameter setting interface; the C5 column will flash.
4. Adjust the C5 Value: C5 is the controller maximum operating current adjustment setting. The setting range is 00 to 10. A value of 10 means the controller outputs its maximum current (full 500W power).
Recommendation: To simulate a 250W motor, you should reduce the current. Press the DOWN button to change the value to 03 (Maximum current value ÷ 2.00) or 04 (Maximum current value ÷ 1.50).
5. Save: Press the SW button to save the current set values.
đ Part 4: Configuring a Legal Throttle (P4 & C4 Parameters)
To avoid your eBike being classified as a motorized vehicle (especially in Germany), the throttle must be tied to your pedaling action.
Configuration Steps:
1. Set P4 (Throttle Startup): In the P parameter settings, navigate to P4. Set the value to When P4 setting is 1, it indicates the handlebar is under "non-zero startup" mode, meaning the throttle is only effective after you start pedaling.
2. Set C4 (Throttle Function): In the C parameter settings, navigate to C4. Set the value to 1.
Why this works: According to the parameter definition, when P4=1 and C4=1, the throttle speed limit is restricted to a legal 6 Km/h before power assist (walk assist mode); after you begin pedaling (power assist), the throttle can reach full speed.
