K03 eBike Compliance Guide: Configuration for European Road Laws

Operating an eBike in Europe requires strict adherence to local regulations to ensure safety and avoid legal penalties. For owners of the K03 model (equipped with the KT-INS01 display and a 48V motor), this guide provides the exact steps to configure your settings for full legal compliance.

Part 1: European eBike Regulations by Country

Most European countries follow the EN 15194 standard, which defines a "Pedelec." If your bike exceeds these limits, it may be reclassified as a moped, requiring a license, registration, and insurance.

Country Max Assisted Speed Max Rated Power Throttle Regulations
European Union (General) 25 km/h 250W Max 6 km/h without pedaling (Walk Assist).
Germany 25 km/h 250W Strictly Prohibited: Throttles that work above 6 km/h without pedaling.
France 25 km/h 250W Strict enforcement; "tuning" can lead to heavy fines.
Austria 25 km/h 600W Higher wattage allowed, but speed limit remains 25 km/h.
Switzerland 25 km/h 500W Allows up to 500W, but requires specific safety equipment.
United Kingdom 15.5 mph (25 km/h) 250W Must follow EAPC (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle) rules.

1. Setting the Speed Limit (LIM)

The most critical setting for EU road legality.

Access Settings: Within 5 seconds of powering on the display, hold both the UP and DOWN buttons simultaneously to enter the General Project Setting interface.
Locate LIM: The screen will show LIM (Maximum Speed).
Adjust: Short press the SW button to make the value flash. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to set the value to 25.
Save: Short press the SW button to stop the flashing and confirm.

2. Adjusting Power Output (C5 Parameter)

Simulates 250W performance on a higher-wattage motor.

  • Enter Advanced Menu: After the LIM setting, long press UP and DOWN again to enter the P-Parameters. Cycle through P1–P5 by short-pressing SW until you enter the C-Parameter environment.

  • Navigate to C5: Scroll until you see C5 (Controller Maximum Current Adjustment).

  • Set Value: * Set C5 to 03 or 04.

    • Rationale: Setting C5 to 03 divides the maximum current by 2.0. This restricts the torque and peak power of the 48V motor, bringing the effective output closer to the 250W "Pedelec" feel required by EU authorities.

3. Throttle Compliance (P4 Parameter)

Crucial for Germany and other strict regions.

  • Locate P4: Within the P-Parameter menu, find P4.

  • Change Mode:

    • Set to 1 (Recommended): This enables "Non-zero Startup." The throttle will only work after you have started pedaling. This is the primary distinction between a legal bicycle and an illegal motor vehicle in many EU regions.

    • Set to 0: This allows "Zero-start" (throttle works from a standstill), which is illegal for road use in Germany and many other EU countries.
